Talking About Books
Web 2.0 Tools- Voki & Skype
ECI 546 New Literacies and Media
The goal of this PBI Project was to answer the question, "How can teachers use technology to assess student's reading while utilizing new technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge (TPACK)." Skype and Voki were the tools used to motivate reading, enhance learning, and aid in our assessment of the student's comprehension. The first activity involved my son giving a book report to a student using Skype. Both children were excited about reading their book for the purpose of sharing it with another child using Skype. The second activity involved students reading a book and then creating a Voki character to tell about their book. The students were motivated to read and comprehend the text, not only to enjoy the story, but also so they could participate in the activity. All of the students were thoroughly engaged throughout both technology activities and they enjoyed collaborating with classmates.
"... the most effective way for students to learn how to read new media is to create it. Conversely, the most effective way for them to create effective new media is to be able to read, deconstruct, and analyze what they're creating."
(Ohler, 2009, p. 47)
"The world of Web 2.0 is a social enviornment connected and facilitated by narrative, which depends upon the literacy skills of its participants to be effective" (Ohler, 2008, p. 45)
