An Example of Cosmopolitanism
VoiceThread
ECI 524 Theory and Research in Global Learning
I recorded an interview using VoiceThread between myself and my son to portray the cosmopolitan traits of his great grandmother. This activity helped me understand the true sense of what it means to be a cosmopolitan. This was also a meaningful experience for my son, and one for which he made a personal connection. Conducting the interview and then having it recorded helped my child understand the meaning of cosmopolitanism, facts about his great grandmother and motivated him to read the script and practice his fluency skills in a fun way.
"School learning should be authentic and connected to the world outside of school not only to make learning more interesting and motivating to students but also to develop the ability to use knowledge in real-world settings" (Ruddell & Unrau, 2009, p. 1621).

Educators will better prepare our students for 21st century learning and multicultural awareness using Web 2.0 tools by having them understand the importance of cosmopolitanism. "Our understanding of toleration means interacting on terms of respect with those who see the world differently. We cosmopolitans think we might learn something even from those we disagree with. We think people have a right to their own lives" (Kwame, 2006, pp. 145-146).
An activity that involves conducting an interview can meet Common Core State Standards across grade levels in the areas of literacy and speaking skills. This is an effective way to teach students about the character traits of an important individual.
